Game Mechanics

The player controls a kiwi called Tiki whose goal is to rescue his friends "kiwi-napped" (sic) by a sea leopard. At the end of each level, one of these characters is issued. Just like in Bubble Bobble, the player can collect letters that form the word "EXTEND" to get a bonus. Unlike Bubble Bobble, levels of The NewZealand Story (TNZS) are not static but dynamic as in Super Mario Bros (see definition of scrolling).

The base weapon is an arrow-shaped projectile, which can be exchanged for bombs, lasers or fireballs. Each weapon has its specificity, and its usefulness varies according to the player's environment. TNZS is distinguished by the possibility of driving several aircraft (baudruche balloons, OVNI, etc) that the player must find or subtly to enemies.

The game is also characterized by its many secret zones, its hidden shortcuts and a special level called "C Heaven" where the player, after losing his last life, tries to avoid the end of the game and has a chance to return to the game.
