About game

History

The player must eliminate aliens named Archontes.

Game Mechanics

Innovations

Gyruss is one shoot 'em upbut with a major innovation. After the shoot 'em up with vertical scrolling (Space Invaders, Galaxian, Galaga) and horizontal scrolling (Defender), Gyruss introduces circular scrolling (tube shooter).

The player's ship carries out a circular journey around enemy ships. The enemy ships appear in the centre of the screen and position themselves in concentric circles. The game environment recalls Spacewar!. However, in Spacewar!, two players fight against each other, and can browse the space freely (they are not obliged to follow a circle). On the other hand, the game Asteroids (Atari, 1979) looks very strongly at Spacewar!.

Gyruss is also the first arcade game to use the stereo.

Levels

The player's ship actually makes a journey between the different planets of the solar system. It starts from Neptune and reaches successively Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and Earth, last stage. The game is divided into levels (internship) interspersed Bonus Courses. The route between two planets requires two levels for Neptune and three levels for all other planets. Upon arrival on a planet, the player is entitled to a Bonus Stage.

Controls

Although the movement is circular, the controller is neither a paddle, nor a trackball, but a joystick 8 directions.
