Game Mechanics
Space Harrier is one shoot 'em up displayed in a view to the third person in pseudo-3D, leaving the character player back to the foreground. The game takes place on a rather empty flat surface on which the camera realizes a scrolling forward. The speed of crime may vary depending on the sequences. The camera remains at the same height, near the ground with the horizon in the middle of the screen. This avatar that controls the player, can move anywhere on the screen; it runs on the ground and has the ability to fly in the air thanks to its cannon. This automatically returns to the center of the screen if the player releases the controls. On the path taken, some elements include rocks, trees, or columns. The enemies arrive in different waves of the front, and rather axial. The array of enemies includes flying saucers, aerial geometric objects and alien vessels, flying rocks, Chinese dragons or mammoths to a 'il, and heads of statues on Easter Island. The objective is to destroy all enemies, while constantly moving, in order to avoid projectiles and obstacles to the ground. These may also be destroyed by the player. The direction of the shot is always fixed forward and the player must move on the screen to get in the axis of the enemy or an element to shoot it and destroy it. If the player is touched by a shot or element of the decor, he loses a life. When the player lost all his lives, he can take back the game where he lost. The player's score simply increases by staying alive.
The game offers 18 levels which uninterrupted. Fifteen of them end with the clash against one boss, which must be killed to access the next sequence. Two sections are bonus levels that contain no enemy, in which avatar mounts an invincible dragon called Uriah and resembling a cat, and must destroy elements like trees to improve its score. The last level is a boss rush, in which the player faces again and turn seven of boss previously fought at the end of each level.
