About game

History

The vil Akuma kidnapped the charming princess Mariko and locked her in her fortress. The hero must therefore deliver it by triumphing over the many guards of the castle and their lord, Akuma.

Game Mechanics

The gameplay de Karateka has the main features of the 2D combat game: combatants are seen from profile and oppose in duel. A differential scroll between the front and the background of the scene - where you can see Mount Fuji - brings a look of depth to the scene.

The fighters get kicked and punched, each shot can be worn at three different heights (top, middle, bottom). In the original version on Apple II, the shot height was managed by the joystick and the hit type controlled via the buttons.

The player has only one life. The health of the fighter is symbolized by a gauge made up of ten points of life. He loses them as he gets shots, but he can also recover them if he rests (without attacking). The enemy's life bar is also displayed on the screen and initially fills the line with the life bars of the two protagonists. The character dies (or is put KO) when he no longer has any point of life. Like most games of the time and because it was particularly short, Karateka couldn't save. Even having defeated the last enemy, the hero can die at a foot of the lady rescued, if he delays taking her in his arms.
