Game Mechanics
Midnight Resistance has the same game mechanics and controls similar to that of the Contra series, and can be played up to two players simultaneously (except on the Sega Mega Drive). The main feature of this arcade game is the inclusion of a rotary joystick similar to that used in Ikari Warriors, in addition to the traditional firing and jump buttons. This rotating joystick allows the player to adjust his shot in one of the eight directions by turning the controller in the hourly or anti-clockwise direction. This allows the player to keep his shot in one direction while moving in another, even by crawling or jumping.
The power-up system is similar to that of Heavy Barrel (a previous Data East game), in which the player can recover keys after defeating some enemy soldiers (each player can own up to six keys at a time). At the end of each mission, the player enters a weapons storage room in which various new weapons and other power-ups can be released from their lockers according to the amount of keys in possession of the player. When the player loses a life, loses all the weapons and keys he has in his possession (a little like Sonic losing his rings) and they can only be recovered if they do not fall from the screen.
The two types of weapons that can be purchased in weapons stores are on the one hand special weapons that will replace the player's default rifle (ignition, shot 3 directions, shot-gun, full-auto) and on the other hand equipped weapons in backpacks (nitro, homing missiles, shower), which trigger by pushing the gun joystick upwards while pressing the shoot button. Both types of weapons have limited ammunition and when the player's special weapon is short of ammunition, it will return to the default rifle. Additional ammunition for the player's special weapon can be purchased in stores when available. There are other power-ups, such as the "overload" that improves the fire power of the player's special weapon (this improvement is lost when the player loses a life), a barrier that provides temporary protection and extra lives.
There are a total of nine missions, each with sets of obstacles and opponents that the player must overcome. The keys he collected during the penultimate stage can be used to free the player's parents before the final battle with "Crimson King". The end varies according to the number of family members the player has saved.
In the film RoboCop 2, we can see RoboCop / Alex Murphy fighting in an arcade game room, and break a corrupt cop on a Midnight Resistance arcade terminal twice.
