Game Mechanics

Maniac Mansion is a two-dimensional adventure game. To progress in the game and find Sandy, the player has three characters with which he explores the Edison house and solves puzzles. The rooms of the house are represented in side view and scroll laterally thanks to the technique of side-scrolling. The player controls his characters through a point-and-click graphical interface and makes them interact with their environment through fifteen verbal commands, as "to speak to", that he can use to communicate with a character. Each character has its own abilities. For example, Syd and Razor can play an instrument and Bernard can repair devices. The game can be finished with any combination of characters. However, some puzzles can only be solved with specific capacities. The action is frequently interrupted by cinematic scenes, a term invented by Ron Gilbert, animated non-interactive sequences, which provide the player with information about the actions of non-player characters and which allow us to advance the story. Outside the green tentacle, the inhabitants of the house are threats to the characters controlled by the player and can enclose or kill them if they see them. If all the characters die, the game is over. The game has five purposes that depend on the selected characters, the characters that survive and the events that take place during the game.
