Game Mechanics
North Atlantic Convoy Raider is one wargame which simulates the pursuit of the collected leather Bismarck by the Royal Navy in the Atlantic Ocean during the Second World War. The player commands the Bismarck and faces the computer, which controls the cruiser Hood and cooked it King George V, Rodney and Prince of Wales the British fleet. The computer also commands the convoys as the Bismarck Try to intercept and sink. The game takes place on a grid of 12x12 cases, each case representing a distance of 10,000 square miles. On this grid, the ships are represented by the first letter of their names. At the beginning of the game, only the Bismarck and the ports in which it can go are visible. The game then takes place in turn. On each turn, the screen displays the position of the already-listed convoys and warships as well as information on the state of Bismarck, its fuel reserves and weather conditions. The player can then enter an order to indicate his direction and the duration during which he wishes to navigate. The program then recalculates the situation at intervals of approximately 30 minutes. When the situation changes, for example if the Bismarck detects a new ship, the program displays a message to warn the player of this change, then waits for a few seconds. If the player presses the space key at that time, he can then order his ship to change direction, for example to avoid combat. At the end of the journey time specified by the player, the program recalculates the positions and updates on the screen, then allows the player to specify a new direction and a new journey time.
When the Bismarck is within reach of a convoy, it fires automatically. When it is within reach of a warship, it asks the player to select a target. The fight then takes place automatically. To win, the player must manage to sink three British warships before returning to the port.
