Game Mechanics
Inspired by Renegade whose informal suite it is, Double Dragon is at its outset a true revolution of the genre and lays the foundations that will be repeated by all beat them all who will follow.
It is the first game of the genre to offer a real two-player mode where they can cooperate or fight. The beating palette is much wider than what was happening so far: where usually two or three types of attacks were possible, Double Dragon add to the traditional punches and kicks, elbow blows, knee, head, projections, jumped kicks returned... The enemies have various attacks while the pattern of the time was rather a type of attack by enemy type. Weapons (except Willy's assault rifle) can be used both by the player and the enemies.
The action does not take place on a simple horizontal plane as for many beat them all older such as Kung-Fu Master (1984) or Trojan (1986). It is also possible to evolve in depth. The introduction of the depth brings a real change in the way of moving and positioning against the wicked. The player is obliged to constantly reassess his positioning and choose his angle of attack to approach the enemies while taking the least possible risks of getting touched.
The two-player game simultaneously and in cooperation is a real novelty: the only battle games to offer simultaneous mode were duel games where players were forced to face each other and for others beat them all, it was necessary to be content to play in turn, a little like a flipper game. Here cooperation is essential to get to the end of the adventure but the game leaves the total freedom for players to fight if they want it and even encourages, at the end, the fratricide duel to know who Jimmy or Billy will have the favors of Marion.
Apart from these innovative elements, the game takes back the bases that popularized the genre. Double Dragon There are four levels in which overnumbered enemies must be confronted and whose end is kept by a boss. A number of guns are available to the player to help him find a way: baseball bats, whips, knives, dynamite sticks...
The game is short and easy enough: it takes less than 30 minutes to finish it.
