About game

Game Mechanics

Nukewar is one wargame which simulates, at the strategic level, a conflict between two imaginary countries in a context of Cold War. The player embodies the chief general of the army of one of the countries and faces the program that commands the neighbouring country. The game takes place on a map of the two countries that are represented on the screen by two grids consisting of 8x8 square boxes. Some cases contain at the outset of cities or military bases that are represented by letters. The boxes of the opposing country are covered by a war fog and are thus initially hidden from the player. The game takes place in turn (each round representing a year) and is divided into two phases: the cold war then the hot war. The first starts between 1956 and 1965 and allows the player to build new bases of bombers or missiles. From 1965 onwards, it can build bases of nuclear submarines and from 1970 onwards it can also build anti-balistic missile bases. In addition to developing its arsenal, the player can also send spies to the neighbouring country to reveal the position of enemy cities and military bases. Its development can also be disrupted by accidents or sabotages in its nuclear power plants, which can contaminate the surrounding terrain and make it unconstructible for several rounds. At any time of the cold war, the player or his enemy can declare war in the neighbouring country and the game then enters his second phase. The country that triggers the war has the advantage of shooting first but its attack has a negative impact on its public opinion that is taken into account at the end of the game to determine the winner. In this phase, players can each in turn activate bases to trigger bombing or launch missiles against the cities or infrastructure of the neighbouring country. The bombers and anti-balistic missiles allow to launch attacks without knowing the exact position of their target but for conventional missiles, the player must indicate the coordinates of the box he wants to attack. The submarines launch their missiles in the same way but have the advantage of being unattractive. After a few years of war, the enemy proposes to negotiate and if both sides agree, the war ends and the programme determines the winner. The camp whose population (which focuses mainly in the cities) is then the most important is declared winner, unless the public opinion is otherwise advised and unless the number of survivors is so low that the game does not designate any winner.
