Game Mechanics
Computer Quaterback is an American football simulation game that focuses on strategy and statistics rather than action. He can play himself against the computer or against another player. It offers two game modes, semi-pro and professional, which are distinguished by the variety of offensive and defensive tactics proposed and the time each player has to define these strategies. In the semi-pro mode, teams are generated automatically by the program while in the professional mode, players can create their own teams. To do this, they are allocated about three million dollars to be allocated in twelve categories that correspond to the different positions: split end, tight end, wide receiver, fullback, halfback, quarterback, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, deep back, special squad and kicker. The sum thus spent determines the quality of the players purchased by the team for each category. Players can create different types of squad by devoting more or less money to certain positions. By spending an important amount for one quarterback and receivers, it can thus favor an attack based on the pass game while devoting the same amount for a halfback, one fullback and his offensive line, he favours a powerful attack.
A game takes place in real time. During the latter, the screen is divided into two parts with to the left a rectangle, representing the field, and to the right the various information about the game, including the position of the players. They are represented by X and O that allow visualizing the offensive and defensive formations of both teams. Only the American football ball is animated and players do not move during a game action. Other game information is displayed via text. At each game phase, players choose the offensive or defensive tactic of their team, without knowing the one chosen by the opposing team. Every tactic with its advantages and disadvantages. In professional mode, the game offers 36 offensive tactics and 24 different defensive tactics, and in semi-pro mode, only 18 offensive tactics and 14 defensive tactics. The choice of tactics is made at paddle in a limited time when the player who has not defined his strategy is awarded a penalty. Each team has three dead times, which can last up to two minutes, for each half-time.
