About game

Game Mechanics

Fortress is an abstract strategy game in which two players fight for territorial control. A part takes place on a game board consisting of 6x6 square boxes. Each in turn and using a joystick or keyboard, players place a new fortress or improve an existing one. A fortress allows to control up to five cases at the same time, the one where it is and the four adjacent cases. A fortress can be improved twice, for a total of three levels of fortification, and its power influences its ability to control adjacent cells. If the adjacent boxes of a fortress are not subject to the same influence on the part of the two players, a flag of the player's color that controls it appears there. On the contrary, if the influence of the two players on the box is the same, none controls it and it remains empty. Fortresses can also face and be destroyed. Thus, when two enemy fortresses are adjacent, the program compares their power in terms of fortification and influence of adjacent fortress friends. If both fortresses are of equal power, they are simply considered attacked. Otherwise, the most powerful destroys the weakest, and takes control of the box so left vacant.

A standard part takes place in 21 laps but it is possible to set the duration between 1 and 54 laps. A party can oppose two human players, or a player to the computer. The program offers five different adversaries whose names 'Genghis Khan, Vauban, Maginot, Galahad and squire' reflect the game style and each have their own strategies and methods. These opponents can also learn games played against a player, which allows them to improve. To do this, the player must save the results of the games on another disk. The player may also consult a history of his or her parts (last 30) or of opponents controlled by the computer.
