Game Mechanics

Breakthrough in the Ardennes is one wargame which simulates, at the operational level, the battle of the Second World War Ardennes. The player can order the Germans and face the computer, which then controls the Americans, or face another player and so choose his camp. The game offers three scenarios, the longest covering the twelve days of the battle. It takes place on a map of the Ardennes on which the top of the screen corresponds to the East and the right of the screen in the North. The map is divided into hexagonal boxes, each case representing a distance of about two miles. On the map are represented different types of land, including forests, rivers, roads and cities. The units of the two camps are represented by symbols that indicate whether it is a unit of infantry, assault tanks, engineers or aerial. Units are also differentiated by the size of a brigade, division, battalion or regiment. The game takes place in turn. Each round corresponds to a combat day and consists of two phases of movement and combat for each camp. Each unit has a number of operating points that are spent to carry out actions such as moving, changing mode (moving or fighting), building or destroying a bridge or fighting. In addition to the operating points, the player also has artillery and aviation points. The number of aviation points are meteorological functions and can be used to launch bombardment, refuelling or air space control operations. In addition to travel and fighting, the player also manages the supply of his troops. For this, it must ensure that its units are close to a refueled road, without an enemy unit being able to interfere with the supply.
