About game

Game Mechanics

Like Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Land is a classic platform game in horizontal scrolling. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong must avoid obstacles, overcome difficulties, pick up bananas, finish all levels and eliminate mini---boss. Most of the gambling mechanisms come from its predecessor, but the conversion undergoes some modifications inherent to the limited capabilities of the Game Boy. The game takes place in five worlds and thirty-seven levels, with four boss and 46 bonus rooms. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are no longer present together on the screen, but used alternately with the possibility of changing at any time of character. Some levels take back the graphics of DKC, others are new creations. New enemies make their appearance, like a tornado that causes the death of the character when he touches it.

The characters can run, jump, bounce higher on tires and land on enemies to kill them. All enemies, however, cannot be defeated in this way. The player can make a rulade with Donkey Kong or a wheel with Diddy Kong to deck enemies. The duo can also perform special actions such as swimming or jumping lianas in lianas.

On the cardboard screens, the player is sometimes blocked by rocks that he can destroy with a bomb that he gets in the nearby levels. The end of each level is also different. A new system of tokens, allowing to gain extra lives, emerges. Half-level, the player meets a kind of window to open serving as a window on, which allows the player to start the game again in this place if he loses.

Like in Donkey Kong Country, the levels have many barrels with various functions. Most of them are identical to those in the Super Nintendo version, but some offer new features, such as barrels that can be oriented by the player so that his character is projected in a direction. The others work as in the original game. Both heroes can pick up and then throw or roll some barrels. This is especially the case of single barrels, which burst in contact with an obstacle or enemy, TNT barrels that trigger explosions, and steel barrels that break everything on their way. Others cannot be moved, such as cannons-tonneaux in which characters can enter before being projected into the air. This is also the case for DK barrels, which allow the missing ally to be recovered if applicable, and starred barrels located in the middle of the level that serve as the checkpoint and allow to start again from this place if the character dies. Finally, there are also barrels, often hidden or hardly accessible, that give access to bonus levels.

Bonus rooms, friendly animals and bonuses like the KONG letters are preserved. Throughout the levels, are arranged bananas that the player can collect. Pick up 100 bananas allows him to earn an extra life (bananas can be arranged one by one, or in the form of banana regimes that make ten bananas win). Many hidden bonus rooms allow both bananas and lives to win, but also to finish the game 100%. Like in DKC, the four letters of the word KONG are scattered in the levels and allow the player to earn a life if he collects them. Rhinoceros Rambi and the ostrich Expresso allow the player, respectively, to scramble on enemies and kill them, and to fly and plan over enemies and dangers. A new backup system allows to memorize the progress of a game, the player to find the four KONG letters to take advantage of it. Even if Cranky Kong appears in the script, no other character of the Kong family is included in the game.

The game is also developed to work on Super Game Boy, and allows to display the game in color and with various screen contours.
