Game Mechanics

Dans Populous, the player has the responsibility of a people that he must guide against that of the opposing divinity by manipulating the landscape, by making civilization grow and using various calamities against the enemy.

The world on which the player intervenes is represented in isometric perspective. Icons around the game area allow to select the actions to be achieved. This interface will be resumed in other Bullfrog games as Powermonger and Populous II.

The game implements a two-player mode in local network by null modem connection on computers.

Populous: The Promised Lands ("The Promised Lands") is an extension that includes five unpublished lands (and their population), more or less fancy tone and increased difficulty: The Big Plains, The Wild West, Blockland, Silly World and the French Revolution. The extension is sold on Amiga, Atari ST, FM Towns and PC at a price of 10 £ About. On PC Engine, the content is offered with the original game during its edition in Super CD-ROM2 format in 1991 in Japan. The extension is available on a 3"5 compatible Amiga and Atari ST.

Populous: The Final Frontier ("The Final Border") is a second extension that brings some additional landscapes. It is offered free of charge in the English magazine The One in November 1989 to the Amiga and ST.

Bullfrog also produced Populous World Editor, an addition that gives users the opportunity to change the appearance of characters, cities and terrain.
