Nightmare Creatures is a beat them all that stands out mainly by its Gothic atmosphere and its great violence.

Exploration takes an important role in the game as it is difficult to survive without putting hands on the various hidden bonuses through the levels. There are many mechanisms in the levels to activate, or walls to destroy to have access to secret passages. Some items are arranged in destructive elements of the game. These aspects, if they give the game a great difficulty for the player who does not sit too much on the levels, nevertheless gives the game a certain depth.

The player has the choice between two characters to complete his quest: Ignatius Blackward is more robust but less offensive than Nadia, his female equivalent. The available beating panel is quite important, even if the game stands out more by the flexibility and handling of the characters; Indeed, if the characters remain fairly rigid (especially when they turn on themselves), they have the ability to make a jump in four directions, as well as jump. If the jump is not accurate and quickly energize during phases or you have to overcome a blow, the esquive is well felt and offers a real dynamic in the fighting, as well as the presence of a guard that holds most of the attacks. The player can also use combat items such as guns, mines, grenades or paralysing grenades. If these items are present in very limited numbers, they are dauntably effective. Level elements, such as explosive barrels, can also serve as a tactical combat opportunity.

The monsters are not very numerous but have the merit of quite original beings: there are enemies inherited from folklores and classical mythologies with, among other things, zombies, gargoyles and wild wolves. Others are more original, like the blue giant, a zombie from 2 meters to 3 arms and as many tets, one to 6 arms that moves like a spider (and that ticks from the canvas), harpies, or mini hydrs to a head but much more tentacles. At the last levels, we see demons appear, they are among the most coriac enemies.

One of the advantages of the game is the location of possible wounds and combos, which allow to cut zombies with surgical precision. Thus, it is possible to cut specifically one hand, head, arm, leg, to separate the lower belly or abdomen from all other parts of the body, etc.
