About game

Game Mechanics

Levels take place almost always according to the same protocol. First a phase of appearance, where leaders, the "Gegas", arise followed by a formation of small insects that they abandon on the playground after having made one or two voltiges. Then a grouping phase where the insect army aligns in tight rows at the top of the screen, in the way of enemies of Space Invaders. Finally, the attack phase where creatures gradually move to the offensive. As the battle progresses, Galagas brings back reinforcements and usually end up joining the battle.

Compared to his predecessors, Galaga '88 offers a wider variety of enemies with unprecedented behaviors. For example, some of them grow at each shot to burst, others move into several small entities or, on the contrary, merge into a large, etc. The goal of the player is finally to properly assimilate the behavior of each and to eliminate as a priority those he considers to be the most dangerous before they go to the attack.

The game includes seven worlds divided into 29 sectors and the end of which the player faces a boss. Some transition phases present a vertical scrolling: it only affects the movement mode of enemies that then cross the screen from top to bottom. By recovering blue crystals (contained in rocks or released by some Galagas), the player can access parallel levels that substitute for normal levels. There are up to four different paths worldwide, each offering its own difficulties. Galaga '88 also offers bonus levels, titled That's Galactic Dancin, in which harmless creatures unfold choreographed at the rhythm of a given musical style (valse, tango, etc.). The goal is simply to eliminate the maximum to fill the points.

In the original version Galaga, the player can recover a second ship that stands at the side of the first ship (the mode dual-ship), multiplying by two the fire power (but also the contact surface). Dans Galaga '88, the player can if he wants to start the game directly with two ships (it costs him a life) and he can now recover a third ship in the game.
