Game Mechanics
Asteroids is one shoot 'em up multidirectional to simple concept. The player controls a spaceship, represented in view of above and confronted with asteroid fields and flying saucers. The goal is to survive as long as possible by destroying asteroids and saucers to encroach points. The play area is fully represented on the screen; Thanks to an effect wraparound, when an element comes out of the screen frame, it reappears on the opposite side (idem for the player's ship. The arcade terminal has five buttons: two are used to rotate the ship to the left and right, another is used to speed up, another to trigger the shots and the last to randomly teleport to the play area (at its own risk). The game is playable at two but only alternately.
When an asteroid is shot, it is divided into two middle-sized blocks, which in turn can be divided into two smaller blocks, which can finally be destroyed. However, the original program can only display 26 asteroids simultaneously on the screen (beyond asteroids no longer divide and only reduce in size). Once all asteroids are destroyed, the player moves to the next level: the number of asteroids present at the beginning of the level varies by four (for the 1er) to eleven (for the 5e and all following). The number of points reported by the destruction of an element is dependent on its size. The flying saucers are two sizes: the largest has the ability to shoot.
Asteroids presents vector graphics in black and white, and a physics studied (ship inertia, asteroid dislocation). It also offers a system of highscore innovative that allows the top ten players to record their initials.
