Game Mechanics
Despite his rather simple scenario, Mega Man IV constitutes, at the narrative level, considerable progress over its predecessors Game Boy and even the games of the series Mega Man on NES. Indeed, the game has various cinematics, be it short animated sequences before a major event or discussion scenes between Mega Man and its creator, the teacher Light.
Mega Man IV has several innovations in terms of playability, the most important of which is the appearance of the "shop of the professor Light" By pressing Select in the level selection screen, the player can buy objects and improvements using P-Chips. This concept will be resumed later in Mega Man 7, Mega Man 8 and Mega Man and Bass.
This game also marks the appearance ofEnergy Balancer (EB), in other words, the energy balancer. The EB unit was also present in Mega Man 6 on NES, but the player had to get it by himself. Here, on the other hand, the device can be purchased at the shop Light, for a certain quantity of P-Chips, and allows Mega Man, when it collects energy capsules, first recharge the weapons with at least energy, as long as no weapon is used at the same time.
The game has several secret passages, in which Protoman will help Mega Man bringing him super energy or vitality capsules.
If the player loses all his lives about four times and still chooses to continue the adventure, Mega Man will be teleported to the professor's laboratory Light. The latter, noting that he may have underestimated Wily's forces, will improve the Mega-Buster de Mega Manconferring an extraordinary power of fire, capable of competing with the power of special weapons. However, to avoid abuse, this improvement will not be recorded by a password. In other words, if the player turns off the game, the improvement will be lost.
Mega Man IV is the only game of the whole series in which Mega Man must take into account the drawback of his weapon: if he shoots a loaded shot, Mega Man will be projected back by the power of the salve.
