Game Mechanics
Crack Down is a multi-directional scrolling shooter for top view, playable at two simultaneously via split screen.
Note that the most successful version is the atari ST version:
- It holds on 2 disks, with a disk format of type 11 sectors per track on 78 tracks + 1 protective track
"short", which was written with a player with slower speed, which allows to write more data.
- The game features a fine sequence like the version of the Coin-op System 24.
- The few interlevel images and interludes have been deleted.
The Amiga version was amputated with several elements:
- The game holds on a single disk, protected in a MFM format, to take advantage of the increase in disk capacity (decoded, the disk is 947ko instead of 880ko for a normal AmigaDos format).
- The intro is amputated with two images
- There's no end sequence, and worse, we can only see it with the corrected version of SPS
According to an English magazine, which interviewed CRA developments programmers, they lost time because SEGA refused to give them access to the technical information of hardware system 24. This was understandable in the sense that the IBM PC format disk of the arcade machine was partly encrypted related to a 68000 custom made by Hitachi. This would have forced them to provide confidential information, and break the card's software and hardware protection system. Once they were able to extract the graphics, they made the ST version, and the Amiga version wiped the plasters, it was converted into very little time with the result that we know.
