Game Mechanics
Phantasie is a video game of medieval-fantastic role in which the player controls a group of six adventurers with which he must find and defeat the wizard Nikademus.
CharactersThe game begins with a stage of creation of the characters that allows it to first select the race of its adventurers from five standard species 'human, dwarf, elf, gnome or hobbit' or to let the computer choose it randomly, which allows it to obtain other types of creatures such as trolls, gobelins, orcs or minotaurs. Each race has advantages and disadvantages. Some species live longer than others and one of the dungeons of the game is only accessible to groups of adventurers that include a minotaur. The game also takes into account racism against certain races, which suffer a charismatic penalty and thus see the cost of their training as a result of their bad reputation. Each character thus obtained has six characteristics that are strength, intelligence, dexterity, constitution, charism and luck. These are randomly generated by the computer, depending on the race of the characters. In addition to these basic features, each character is assigned points in different skills such as attack, parade, swim, listening, ability to detect or disarm traps, to crochet a lock or to find objects. These points are distributed according to the race and class of the character. Depending on the characteristics obtained, the player can choose the class of each adventurer, among the six proposed that are warrior, ranger, thief, monk, priest and magician. These classes do not impose restrictions on characters who can therefore be equipped with any weapons or armour if their attributes allow them. In addition to race, craft and their six attributes, the characters have magic points that allow them to launch the spells they learn. Each spell has a cost, between one and four points of magic, and when a character has no more magic, it can no longer cast spells. At the end of each fight, the characters gain experience. Winning levels, however, requires training, in a guild, which costs a certain amount of gold coins, which increases as the characters progress.
ExplorationThe game begins in the city of Pelnor where it can create characters and composed its adventure group. As in the other cities of the game, the player can also access different shops: the bank, or he can deposit his gold coins, the armory or he can buy equipment for his characters, and the guild where he can convert the experience points of his characters to level and make learn new spells to his characters. Once his group is formed and his characters are equipped, he can start exploring the rest of the world. The map of the latter is divided into sixteen square cases. Only the first two are initially fully visible and the others must be explored to discover what is hidden there. On the map there are different types of land, including forests, hills, mountains, marshes, meadows and roads. The probability of meeting monsters varies depending on the type of terrain that the group crosses, only the roads being relatively safe. On the way there are also inns that allow the player to regenerate the points of life and magic of his characters, in exchange for a number of gold coins. In addition to cities and hostels, the player can also discover dungeons, such as caves, castles or abandoned cities. When the adventurer group enters it, these dungeons are displayed as a plan. As the group explores them, their corridors and doors appear on the screen. The probability of meeting monsters there is higher but treasures are also more important.
CombatThe meetings do not necessarily lead to a fight. It is indeed possible to discuss with the creatures encountered or recruit them. If the player decides to attack, the game switches on a combat screen. The six player characters are then posted online at the bottom of the screen and the opposing creatures above, at different levels. The fight takes place in turn and in each turn, the player chooses the type of attack that each of his characters must use. Several offensive options are indeed proposed and allow the player to dose the number and power of the shots carried. During a fight, the thief and the magician can attack any enemy while the combatants in the body can attack only the closest monsters. Other options also allow the player to ask his characters to flee or defend, or try to weld their enemies to push them to surrender. At the end of the tower, the attacks are initiated in a random order and the computer calculates their results. Animations allow the player to visualize the various attacks, for example by showing a warrior raised his weapon or a magician throwing a spell, and at the end of the battles, the characters perform a short dance of victory if they win.
InterfaceThe game offers a divided screen graphical interface. Depending on the versions of the game, the player uses the keyboard, mouse or joystick to navigate in a series of menus that allow him, among other things, to move his adventure group to the world map, to explore the dungeons or to buy equipment.
