Game Mechanics

Kentucky Racing resumes the principle of one of the fairs foraine stands. In this, the players launch several balls on a plateau forming a wooden slope, like the Japanese billiards, the anchor of the flipper. Depending on the points scored, these pitches advance more or less quickly mechanical horses on a track, thus simulating a horse race. Kentucky Racing takes over nine traditional races, including the Kentucky Derby, which gives its name to this video game; among these races, only two types are represented, the dish race and the steeple-chase.

The game can be played alone or two players and has three horses competing for each race: depending on the case, the computer controls the remaining horse(s). In front of each of the two pool tables displayed at the bottom of the screen, a hand-shaped cursor makes round-trips; a pressure on the shoot button stops the cursor and thus defines the positioning of the throw while its power is defined by the longer or less time that this button is pressed. Success in throwing the ball in a hole advances the player's horse, and the further the hole is far, the longer is the distance travelled by the horse. Moreover, only some holes allow the horse to jump a barrier. Among those available, the easy mode makes it easy to reach the holes and succeed the race by finishing only second. A race won then allows to compete with the next; The distribution of holes on the logger track is changed accordingly.
