Game Mechanics

Gemstone Warrior is sometimes described as a role video game and as a precursor of action-RPG games as Diablo. According to Matt Barton, he shares characteristics with these, such as his fantastic medieval theme and his gameplay in real time. He notes, however, that in the absence of a class system and the progression of the characters, through experience or skills, he does not consider it a role video game and rather describes it as a role video game shoot 'em up. Using the keyboard or joystick, the player controls a character equipped with armor that explores dungeons and shoots arrows or fireballs on his enemies to destroy them. Its objective is to bring together the five parts of a powerful artifact capable of bringing peace and prosperity to the world of the game. In addition to his two weapons, the bow and fireballs, the character has an inventory that can contain various objects, including a quiver for his arrows. Depending on the weapons used during the fighting, the character's inventory is updated to reflect the amount of ammunition left to it. The weapons and the hero's inventory are displayed on the screen, as well as his life bar, clock and points. The rest of the screen is occupied by a two-dimensional representation of the hero and his environment, which defies when the character reaches one of the edges of the screen. Monsters can arise from any direction. Some of them are disease carriers and must be killed quickly to prevent the character from getting infected, others multiply during the fighting. During his exploration of the various environments of the game, the player has the opportunity to search the corpses of his enemies or to examine artifacts to find magical objects there. These objects are generally beneficial and, for example, allow the player to have spells of poisoning, invisibility, protection, destruction or care. However, some objects may be trapped or contaminated with demonic magic.
