About game

Game Mechanics

Battles in Normandy is one wargame which simulates, at the operational level, the Battle of Normandy of the Second World War. The game offers eight scenarios, each with between two and four historical variants that determine the starting conditions. The first three simulate the landing of Normandy on the beaches of Omaha Beach, Utah Beach and Sword Beach respectively. The fourth traces the battle of Cherbourg in which the Americans try to take the port of Cherbourg. The fifth simulates the battle of Carentan with the capture and defense of Carentan by the Americans. The latter trace three of the British operations to break the German lines around Caen, the Battle of Villers-Bocage, Operation Goodwood and Operation Epsom. Each scenario can be played alone against the computer or two. In the first case, the player can choose to order either of the two camps. For each scenario, it can also set the handicap of both camps, which influences the calculation of points of victory rather than the characteristics of units or artificial intelligence. Like its predecessor, the game incorporates a utility that allows the player to create and modify their own scenarios. The game relies on the engine of Battlefront (1986) whose system is almost identical. As in the latter, the player orders an army body composed of up to three divisions, each of which can contain up to four regiments. In addition to the four battalions that each regiment can contain, the player has several independent battalions, which can be attached to any division. In total, the player can order up to sixty battalions of fourteen different types. The units displayed on the screen correspond to these battalions but the player does not directly give them orders. Instead, he transmits his orders to his division commanders, who then transmit the orders to their subordinates.
