About game

History

In 2048, Mars was colonized and exploited for the turbinium buried in its basement. The planet is tyrannically administered by Vilos Cohaagen, which controls mines and oxygen supply.

On Earth, Douglas Quaid leads a quiet life: he has a job, friends and a woman, Lori. However, he does not feel in his place and dreams very frequently of Mars, seeing himself exploring the colony by scaphandre, in the company of a brown woman, while he admits himself never went on this planet.

Obsessed by this recurring dream, it seems interested in the offers of the company Rekall that offers its customers the implant of factice memories, but that appear as real as real memories. Against the advice of his wife and the warnings of his best friend Harry, who heard of an accidentally lobotomized client, he decides to get a memory implanted at home Rekall.

While Quaid discusses the memory to be implanted with Rekall's employee, he chose without hesitation the Mars planet as a destination for his memory. Although at the beginning reluctant to pay additional options, he accepts the idea about memories coming out of the ordinary, memories in which he might be something other than himself: famous sportsman, billionaire, playboy, secret agent. Based on the idea, Quaid answers a questionnaire that will help Rekall to program the best possible memory for Quaid: he will be a secret agent, chased by killers, will discover a secret about alien artifacts, etc. And above all, he will fight with a beautiful brown woman, a woman who looks very similar to that of his recurring dream.

While Quaid is ready to receive his memory, he is asleep to proceed with the operation. However, shortly after the start of the operation, employees face an enraged Quaid, who asks them to let him go because his cover of infiltrated agent was discovered and other agents will come to kill them.

For the person responsible Rekall, Quaid woke up during the implantation of memory in memory and is dreaming awake. However, the employee responsible for the operation announces that this is impossible because the dream has not yet been established at Quaid. In order to avoid any problems, Quaid is drugged and dumped unconscious in a robotaxi, his file having previously been erased from Rekall.

Note: From this moment on, the film scenario is radically different from Philip K. Dick's story

Quaid then wakes up without any idea what could have happened to him. While he's on his way home, he crosses his friend Harry and a group of men who reproach him in a very aggressive way for going home Rekall. Quaid was then attacked by Harry and the men who accompanied him and after a quick fight Quaid kills them all, despite him and his great surprise.

Quaid then goes home and tells the whole story to his wife who tells him that he dreamed and that none of this is true. However, after she noticed the blood on Quaid's hands, she realized that he said it was true and the attack without explanation. She is quickly mastered by Quaid, and admits that she is part of the Agency, that he is not Doug Quaid, that her memory has been erased and that she has been made of other implants in which he is married with her.

Doug doesn't have time to get more explanations because he realizes that Lori is trying to save time, allowing Richter-led men to come to eliminate him. Quaid just escapes them and runs away.

He is contacted by a person who claims to have known him before and leaves him a briefcase that Quaid had entrusted to him in which he discovers money, identity papers, a laptop and other objects.

As soon as the computer is ignited, he sees a video message recorded by himself. His alter-ego video tells him that he's actually called Hauser, that he worked for Cohaagen on Mars, that there were important things about the Martian mines, that he helped the fighting resistance against Cohaagen but that he was caught and that Hauser's memory was replaced by Quaid's. In addition, the video message tells him how to remove the skull he has in the skull that allows the men of Cohaagen to easily locate him, and ends up telling him that he must go to Mars to contact the resistance.

Arrived on Mars, he sows the local militia and the men of Cohaagen and takes a follow-up to the Hilton, hotel in which he had already stayed under the name Brubaker. Following a hint apparently left by himself in his personal safe at the hotel, Quaid leaves in the hot quarter of the Martian colony, Venusville, a quarter exposed to Martian radiation caused by the exploitation of turbinium, radiation causing mutations on unprotected inhabitants. He meets the woman he saw in his dreams: Melina, with whom he would have had a relationship. The dead believer, killed by Cohaagen, and not forgiving him to escape without warning, Melina does not believe Quaid's explanations that his memory has been erased and that he does not remember anything. Melina is not convinced and hunting Quaid.

Back at the Hilton, Quaid receives a visit from a man presenting himself as Dr. Edgemar. The latter explains to him that the procedure for setting up the memory went wrong, that he is still on Rekall's seat dreaming. Edgemar teaches Quaid that he is stuck in his own delirium, that he invents his dream as he lives it and suffers from a schizo-embolia. Edgemar was implanted in Quaid's dream to reason him and to support his words, he shows him that everything that happened so far was just what he ordered at Rekall: his secret agent cover, the killers, Mars, Melina' However, the dream must be stopped before Quaid suffers irreversible damage to the brain. He sends Lori to confirm everything and assures Quaid of his love, imploring him to return to reason and to resume the course of his life. Quaid thinks and wonders how he should proceed by admitting this explanation. Edgemar then presents him a pill that he sums him to swallow as a manifestation of his desire to return to the real. Quaid hesitates and robs his gun on the doctor's temper, asking him whether to press the relaxation would have consequences while all this is just a dream. Edgemar asserting that they would be disastrous not for himself but for Quaid who would then definitively end up trapped in his hallucinations, making him inexorably risk short-term schizophrenia, Quaid resists to obtemperate and is about to suck the pill when he sees a drop of sweat flowing on the cheek of Edgemar, Quaid gets her the pill in her face before slaughtering it coldly. Cohaagen's hands then invade the room and Quaid is captured. As he leaves the hotel, Melina (who finally believed Quaid) comes to his rescue. Quaid kills Lori with a bullet in his head and flees with Melina before Richter and his men can kill him.

Back in Venusville, Melina learns Quaid that Kuato, the leader of resistance, would be able to extract the crucial information that Quaid has in mind. Retrovealed by Richter and his men, Melina and Quaid fled into Benny's taxi, a Martian mutant, and refuted into the secret cache of resistance. Quaid then discusses with George who leads him into a secure room where he has to present him to Kuato. This one turns out to be actually a Siamese mutant lodged in George's belly. He reads the spirit of Quaid and discovers the truth about the Martian mines, which house a gigantic extraterrestrial reactor.

The hiding of the resistance is taken by the Martian militia, Quaid and Melina taken captive and taken to Cohaagen. Kuato is killed but then announces Quaid before dying that he has to activate the reactor. At Cohaagen, the latter shows a video message to Quaid in which both are friends and learns that the entire story of Quaid, its erased memory, the briefcase, was only a trap stretched by Cohaagen and it to lure the telepaths of the Martian resistance and allow Hauser to infiltrate and destroy once and for all the Martian resistance.

Quaid is then again installed on a Rekall machine so that he can be reinstalled by Hauser's memory, while other Cohaagen employees are about to erase Melina's memory. Quaid and Melina, however, managed to escape and went to search for the reactor. After killing Benny (who was actually a Cohaagen agent), Richter and the men of Cohaagen, Melina and Quaid arrive on the extraterrestrial site. Cohaagen joins them and explains to them that the extraterrestrial machine is in fact only a giant terraformer machine and that its activation would transform the Martian ice cap into a breathable atmosphere for all, which he strongly opposes because there would lose control of the planet, being the only air provider of Mars.

While Cohaagen threatened to detonate the room controlling the activation of the machine, Quaid seized explosives and threw them into an aeration pipe. The open breach creates a depressurization that aspires to everything outside. Cohaagen is projected on the Martian surface without scaphandre and dies of asphyxia and decompression. Before being sucked on the surface with Melina, Quaid managed to activate the machine. They are projected in turn outside, but are saved in extremis by the breathable air wave cracked by the extraterrestrial machine.

Mars is terraformed and Venusville released from the yoke of Cohaagen. Quaid embraces Melina wondering if all this was a dream or reality.
