Game Mechanics

Professional Tour Golf is a golf simulation that allows up to four players to compete, or a player to face the computer. Players play golfers, which they can choose from among the twenty professional golfers offered in the game, such as Arnold Palmer or Craig Stadler. They can also create up to forty custom golfers, of which they can define the features, which are then back up on the hard drive. Their statistics can then be updated to refine their level after a few routes or to simulate the evolution of their abilities. The characteristics of the golfers are entered into the game through a utilitarian program which in particular allows to define the handicap and distance to which the golfer can propel the ball with the different types of club. These data are then used by the program to generate the detailed characteristics of the golfer, which the player can then define the name.

Two 18-hole courses are available in the original game. The first is a representation of that of Pebble Beach and the second is composed of holes among the most difficult and unusual of routes such as Augusta National, Merion and Oakmont. The 18 holes of a course are displayed one by one in view of the top. The player can visualize the location of the starting area, fairway and green as well as obstacles such as trees, water or bunkers. On the screen is also displayed the scale of the card so that the player can realize the distances. Players play each in their turn, in an order respecting the rules of golf. In the player's turn, the program displays the initials of his character on the screen as well as the distance that separates him from the hole. The player can then select the club he wants to use, a help screen allowing him to view his statistics with each type of club. Depending on its position, it can also select the type of hit it wants to perform before setting the direction of the shot, by entering a value between 0 and 360° using the keyboard. It is to help by the computer that suggests a value, which is not necessarily optimal. Finally, it may decide to apply an effect to it, with five options available in this area. Once the shot is executed, the player visualizes the trajectory of the ball on the screen, which is calculated by the computer according to the shot realized but also the wind force. When the ball finally arrives on the green, the display passes from a general view to a view representing only the green. The player can then choose between three types of putter then make his shot as before. At the end of each hole, the program displays a score screen that details the score of each player and their par. The player can then save the game, or pass directly to the next hole
