Game Mechanics

Cartels and Cutthroats is an economic simulation game. The player plays an anonymous company president and aims to develop his business while fighting against his competitors, controlled by other players or by the computer. The game simulates a market economy that takes into account the evolution of prices, interest rates and wage claims as well as state or trade union interventions.

At the beginning of a game, the player can leave the computer generated randomly a scenario or create a custom scenario. For this reason, it can play on several variables including the type of product sold by the company (first necessity product, luxury product), the evolution of the cost of the raw material (fluctuating, random or demand-based), the rate of inflation, economic growth and the probability of an economic crisis. In one part, players companies can be impacted by various random events, such as fires, strikes and solicitations from charity organizations. Each game tower represents three months. In each turn, the player first receives a report on the results of his previous quarter's activities. He can then plan the next round by managing the different departments of his company including the marketing or research and development.
