Game Mechanics

Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior is a face-to-face fighting game that can play one or two players. Players play barbarians armed with swords fighting in four different environments: a clearing, a throne, a volcano and an arena. The duel mode of the game allows the player to face the computer or another player in battles with a time limit. The game also offers a campaign mode consisting of a series of battles connected between them by a scenario.

Using a joystick or keyboard, players can move their characters into the arena and make jumps and rolls to avoid a blow. By now pressing the attack button, he can order his barbarian to kick or head and attack with his sword. Each barbarian has twelve points of life, represented by six circles in the upper corners of the interface, a successful attack inflicting a point of damage. The character dies when his life points reach zero. Alternatively, a precise neck stroke can decapitate the opponent and kill him instantly, a gobelin entering the arena to pull out the body and shoot in the head. If the player doesn't give an order to his character for a while, the game runs a self-reference to attract the player's attention: the barbarians turn their head to the player, raise their shoulders and say "c'mon". Points are assigned to the player during a successful attack, the number of points depending on the complexity of the coup, and a scoreboard shows the best scores obtained in the game.

In the campaign mode of the game, the player controls an anonymous barbarian whose purpose is to defeat the evil wizard Drax who captured Princess Mariana. The player faces other barbarians in death fights. After defeating them, he confronts the wizard. Once she's beaten, Mariana throws herself at the foot of her savior and the screen becomes black. In the version of the game published in the United States, the character controlled by the player is called Gorth.
