Game Mechanics
Zombi is an action-adventure game with a subjective view that mixes exploration, collecting objects, riddle resolutions and real-time fighting. In this graphic adventure, the player aims to escape from the shopping center by finding gasoline, allowing to leave in the helicopter. The graphical interface is monochrome, entirely in black and grey, with some blue elements (usable objects and interface frames) and red (on health gauges, hour and frame marking the presence of a zombi). This interface is divided into several zones. The widest window displays a fixed screen showing various supermarket locations such as shops, escalators and various corridors, scattered over the five floors of the supermarket. This window therefore displays a series of these fixed screens, and when the player decides to move the character, another fixed screen is loaded with an effect of scrolling. A three-dimensional cube icon indicates a direction (north, south, east, west, mount and descend), and depending on each image, a new image is loaded. The four protagonists are displayed at the top of the interface as portraits. The player incarnates and controls one of the four characters, which then appears to the right of the screen accompanied by his inventory. In this place, three gauges represent the health of the protagonist. The player must watch the hunger, thirst and sleep of the character. In the middle on the upper part is also a portrait of the enemies. A clock that indicates the time is displayed to help this task. A small box also displays messages on the current situation. The characters can act and move independently from each other.
To advance in the adventure, the player has a range of eighteen actions represented as icons located at the bottom of the screen. All actions are selected and validated using the keyboard or joystick. The player can move from room to room in all directions or ride in vehicles, feed, rest in a bed, open or close a door. It can also collect, use and throw objects, such as keys, a rifle, fuses or a torch. It can also activate objects.
The objects are essential, to the extent that they allow to advance in the places, to solve puzzles or to defend themselves. The player can spot them thanks to their blue color, but it must look for interest in solving the puzzles that the game offers. It enjoys being in a shopping centre and can visit the various shops to find these objects, or simply pick them up on the ground. The game offers a multitude, some of which have no utility. However, the limit of four objects per character requires the player to collect only the objects he thinks he needs. These puzzles are kind of mini-quests, such as re-establishing the current, moving a truck to prevent zombies from entering the mall, or storing dead bodies in a cold room. Some rooms are dived into the dark, and are only partially lit if the player finds and uses a torch lamp.
During the adventure, the four heroes confront zombies and the antagonist group of the Hells Angels which pullulate in the mall, displayed if any by a portrait at the top of the interface. The enemies attack the player after eight seconds spent in the same room. The fighting takes place in real time. To dry a hit to its opponent, the player must press two buttons repeatedly or move the opponent joystick for about 20 seconds (or mouse button for certain portages), and stop a cursor at the right time on a mire placed in the interface bar. In case of success, the blow is worn. The game offers as the only firearm, a rifle that can be recovered in a weapons store. The enemies can be killed by several shots in the body, or in one shot in the head. The player can also use tools like white weapons.
If a character's health is reduced to zero, it is transformed into a zombie and then wanders in the room where he died. It is then more reasonable for the player and the survival of his team to eliminate the dead-living character. His portrait is then replaced by a cross. The four characters thus represent as much life for the player. The player must eat and drink the character, make him sleep. The game includes a day-night cycle. Moreover, the game offers a backup system that allows to memorize the progress of a game and to start over at any time.
