Game Mechanics
The player is in charge of a group of 4 submarines to push a fleet of enemy invasion.
The game starts in "Deployment" mode composed of a map showing the player's island to the extreme right of the screen and a port controlled by the enemy at the top of the screen. A first enemy convoy, composed of six ships, begins to arrive from the far left of the screen, and goes to the enemy rally port. The player runs his submarines to intercept the convoys while they cross the ocean. The submarines will move straight on their last course until they stop or until they reach an enemy convoy.
When a submarine meets a convoy, the game goes into combat mode. The screen represents a simulated periscopic view and a sonar map of the combat zone. It is possible to control the speed, depth, and position of the submarine rudder while attempting to track and flow each vessel of the convoy. The convoy is defended by a destroyer (or two in higher difficulty levels) equipped with surface cannons and underwater mines that will track the player's submarine if detected. The player's submarine is armed with a pair of spear tubes. The supply of torpedoes is unlimited but requires a charging time. It is also possible to cut the sonar and the submarine engines to remain silent and avoid detection. If the submarine of the player suffers too much damage, it will flow (the screen gradually becoming blue, as if flooded) and the screen of the deployment card will reappear. Similarly, if the player destroys the six ships, or if the player's submarine is far enough from the enemy convoy, the game returns to the deployment screen.
If enough convoys reach the rally port, the enemy invasion fleet, composed of three destroyers and three troop transports, will be launched to the player's home. The player must stop the fleet before it reaches its attachment port, otherwise the game is over.
However, if the player succeeds in destroying the six convoys (36 ships in total), or if too few ships reach the harbour so that a fleet of invasion cannot be formed, the player wins. The end screen then shows a last enemy fleet leaving the assembly port and ringing the retreat while resounding a recovery of the Horse of the Walkyries by Richard Wagner.
