Game Mechanics
GeneralTony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 allows the player to play a famous or fictitious skater in a view to the third person with a fixed camera. The player must perform figures and perform different missions to collect points in order to unlock the following levels, buy statistics or equipment.
The gameplay is rather simple and oriented arcade: the player can largely knock against obstacles or enter the walls without falling, allowing a smoother game. Like games of the same time as Motocross Madness or Supreme Snowboarding, THPS2 is free from a realism too present to allow quality playability. As such, if the character can jump to reasonable heights and only execute slide quite short at the beginning of the career, however, it can reach demeasured heights, unrealistic chaining several figures thanks to the manual or realize slide long distances. The player can move freely in the level without constraint and decide to fulfill the different objectives in the order he wants.
Air: Jump height. Hang Time: Stay in the air. Ollie: Height of ollie, jump from the ground. Speed: Ground speed. Spin: Speed of rotation of the board. Landing: Quality of reception. Switch: Quality of the skater switch. Rail Balance: Quality of the balance on the rails. Lip Balance: Quality of balance on the lip. Manual: Quality of balance in manual. |
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 includes some elements gameplay RPG type that allows to change the physical abilities and qualities of skaters. Each character has unique features that the player can increase thanks to the dollars collected in career mode. The player can also buy new skateboards that are more efficient but also improve them and get new tricks. Each skater has ten gauges with ten levels each. The more the bar is filled, the more important the quality is.
Movements and tricksDans Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, the character moves by himself and is directed by the directional keys of the keyboard or the directional cross. The skater can jump using a button and the player can turn it on himself when he's in the air. The game offers about 150 tricks different.
A button allows to manage switch, regular or goofy, and another allows to get in Nollie or fakie. Pass from Nollie or fakie and vice versa in a figure increases the multiplier factor of the points collected for this figure.
The player has a button to realize the slides (slip with the board on the edge of a rail, a walk, a ramp), a button for the grabs (hold his board with hands during a jump) and another button for the ? (turn the board with the feet during a jump). The player can spin it several times while riding several tricks. A combination of keys allows to run the tricks at coping (lip).
It is also possible to realize wall curtain (rolling against a wall) or transfers (change of ramps), as well as manuals (roll only on two wheels) allowing the player to chain figures.
To keep the balance in manual, in slide and trick at coping , the player must use the right and left keys, or top and bottom. When the player starts a manual, it can control the balance with a balance that is displayed vertically next to the player. The game allows to chain jumps or jumps slides then go through manual in the same combo; This technique increases the number of points obtained.
The more varied and complex the figure is, the more points it brings; the quality of the repainting (receipt on the ground) is also important as it affects the score of the combo performed as well as the speed of the character after the reception and the bar special. The quality of the coating can be assessed perfect and unclear.
In addition to regular skateboard movements, the player can place a special if the gauge special flash. It must then create a combination of keys to trigger a skate figure reporting a large number of points. The bar special fills in by making figures that report many points; Nevertheless, the special fills only gently if the executed figures are basic or too often repeated: the variation of tricks is necessary. The more the gauge fills, the faster the skater moves. When full, the gauge starts flashing and the player can perform the trick special.
Other combinations of keys are possible, allowing for example to perform a no comply or get up quickly.
An important innovation included in THPS2 is the possibility of modifying the tricks. The game allows to customize the tricks as well as buying new figures.
ScoreThe score is calculated according to the number of tricks performed in a combo and the quality of the figure performed.
For each tricks 50 to 8,000 points are given, depending on the category of the figure. To these, there are different multiplier coefficients related to several factors: the number of rotations in the air, each half-turn carried out raising the coefficient of one to two points, which can range from 1.5 to 14; the quality of the reception, perfect or imprecise, attributing a compliance coefficient of 1.5 or 0.75, a normal reception giving a coefficient equal to 1; the repetition of the figures, plus the player performing the same trick in the same combo, the lower the applied coefficient, knowing that the first trick not repeated gives a coefficient equal to 1.
The score given by each tricks made in the combo is then added. There is a last multiplier, depending on the position of the skater: as the player performs his combo in the basic position, switch, in Nollie or fakiethe coefficient is 1, 1,2, 2 and 2. For the last two positions, 200 and 240 points are added respectively.
Finally, the latter subtotal is multiplied by the number of trick performed in the combo to give its total score.
Interface and featuresDuring the game, at the top of the screen and from left to right are displayed the total score with the bar special below, in the center the timer, and to the right an icon showing the position on the board. At the bottom of the center are displayed the names of the figures (and the sequences executed) and the score of each figure.
The game offers a system of high score level and backup system. Each game session is recorded, the player can watch it at the end of the game. It can also change the view by bringing the camera closer to the character using a button.
Game modesThere are several game modes: free skate, career mode, simple session, multiplayer and skatepark editor.
Career mode
Levels and difficulties are increasing. All levels include a number of tickets to be harvested, more or less hidden and accessible. Career mode allows access to a shop in which the player can acquire new boards and new figures.
Each regular level has ten missions to be completed for a period of two minutes. Some are common at all levels, such as getting three crescent scores called Best Score, Score Pro and Score dement, these scores being increasingly important for each new level, collecting all the letters from the word " SKATE" that are scattered in the levels, taking the secret video cassette or finishing the level at 100%. Other missions are very varied: they can, for example, ask to make figures in specific locations, to make jumps in difficult places, to collect objects or to drive on game elements.
Each challenge made makes it possible to earn money, which makes it possible to improve the characteristics of skaters and to buy more efficient boards as well as new figures.
Three of the levels are competitions in which the player must achieve the highest possible score on three one minute rounds each in order to collect the best possible score of the judges. Only the two best rounds are taken into account in final classification. The higher the score, the more the final score is, but like any classical jury, the virtual jury notes the skater according to the variety of figures, their difficulty and their quality. Logically, bad receptions and falls harm the final note. A gold medal can achieve 90% of the goals of one level and the remaining 10% are won by collecting hidden tickets in each level.
The game offers for each level, in addition to all the content of the career mode, a list of gaps, accessible via the main menu. One. gap is a small challenge: the player must then realize a skate figure or a jump at a specific location, a slide on a specific bar, rail or bench, chain jumps or jumps tricks on a decorative element of the level. The system gap considerably extends the life of the game because a part of research is necessary to find the right spot where he must be executed.
Multiplayer
The two-player mode allows you to play five types of multiplayer games: "Graffiti", "Trick Attack", Chat, Pendu and "Free skate" The game also offers a cat. On PC, the game is possible in LAN and in hotseat for the pendulum; the game Free skate is absent however.
In Graffiti mode, the time is set by the players who try to make the greatest score on elements of the decor. Every time a skater does one trick on an object, it is automatically distinguished by a color. If another player redoes trick on the same object by getting a bigger score, the color changes. The goal is to link the most elements to the color associated with the skater.
Trick Attack is a free mode where the player can chain the tricks as he wishes, to perform the best score. It is possible to smash the competitor to knock it down and avoid it to score points.
The Cat is a reinterpretation of the game of the wolf (tag in English: the player must perform tricks and touch a player then no longer be "affected". At the end of the game, the last player not to be touched won.
The Pendu is a game that takes place by two players, each turn, on the same platform and the same screen. Two players compete on any level of the game in one round each, for a duration of 8 seconds (or one trick). The starting point of each sleeve in a level is random. The player who has the lowest score gets a letter from the word hung: the first one who gets the whole word lost.
Free skate allows the player to skate freely on the same level without any score lenses.
Simple session and free skate
Among all unlocked levels and characters, the Simple Session mode allows the player to achieve the most important score over a period of two minutes.
The free skate mode does not impose a time limit, the endless set on the chosen levels.
Editor park
The game offers a park publisher, the Park Editor, with more than 100 rooms and a variable number of pre-built parks on platforms. The level editor is simple and intuitive with an easy grip. The construction of a level is done on a flat square and empty space that the player can turn under the angle he wants. Four themes are available: power plant, exterior, factory and bonus environment. Two drop-down lists allow you to choose elements, the player can turn them and put them to the height he wants before validating. The player also decides the starting point and can add gaps.
