Game Mechanics
Questron is a video game of medieval-fantastic role that takes place in three dungeons made of wire. It is distinguished from other games of the genre thanks to promising game mechanisms such as mini-games, which allow to improve the characteristics of the characters, or casinos in which the player can bet gold. It is also one of the first role games in which some monsters can only be killed with special weapons.
The game starts with a stage of character creation, which is just giving it a name. All the characters begin the adventure with 15 points in each of their attributes, such as strength, endurance, dexterity, intelligence and charism. Depending on its actions during the game, the number of points associated with each feature can increase or, on the contrary, decrease. A character can be saved at any time.
The player starts the adventure in the section "in the open air" Game. In the latter, the screen displays a map of the area, with the city of Geraldtown in its centre, on which the player directs his character using the keyboard or a joystick. On the left of the screen appears a command list that allows for example to put a armor or to equip a weapon. Just below this list appears another shorter list, which indicates the amount of life, gold, food and time the character has. Finally, at the bottom of the screen is indicated the action currently underway. One of the commands allows access to another screen that details the attributes and the character's inventory, which can be led to contain weapons, armour and spells. The movements of the character are usually on foot, but it is then possible to buy a mount like a horse or lama, which has the advantage of better resisting at altitude. A sailboat also allows to cross the lakes of the continent, and a frigate allows to reach the continent where the Mantor wizard is located. It is finally possible to acquire an eagle that allows to easily move on the entire surface of the world of Questron. On the map appears several types of land that differ by their appearance and by the type of creatures that the player can encounter. When the player fights an enemy, the result depends on his attributes (force, endurance and agility), the weapon and armor he is equipped with and the strengths and weaknesses of the creature he faces. During the fight, a status bar appears at the bottom of the screen. More than a hundred types of creatures populate the world of Questron, each with a clean appearance and reactions. Each creature is also more or less sensitive to the type of weapon used to fight them.
By exploring the world of the game, the player discovers cities, cathedrals and castles. These are initially identified as special boxes on the map. When the player goes there, the game offers him to enter and, if he accepts, the scale of the card changes to allow him to visualize the area. In these areas, the player can chat with merchants, farmers and other characters, these discussions can help him in his quest. It is sometimes possible to buy them food or objects, or to earn money by playing a game of chance like roulette or blackjack.
The player can finally go to one of the three dungeons of the game, which he must conquer before he can face Mantor. These dungeons must be explored in a specific order. They are locked and you have to get an iron key, a bronze key and a gold key to penetrate it. The first two dungeons consist of eight levels and the third of sixteen levels. These dungeons are displayed in three dimensions with a wire rendering. The screen then displays the walls, ceilings, doors and stairs of the dungeon and the player little see the enemy creatures approached by far and thus shoot them before they are in the body-to-body.
