About game

Game Mechanics

The player directs a soldier from the future to the various weapons in five gigantic worlds cut into two or three levels. The game is a mix of platforms, shoot them up and exploration.

The soldier and his attributes

Playability remains considered a strong point in the game. The character, very handy, can achieve long jumps with great precision. Its gyroscope mode which allows it to turn into a circular shape with a reduced size is now usable at will. Like Mario, the character can now jump on some enemies to get rid of it.

The character recovers most of the weapons from the first episode with some new features. The base weapon includes the "multiple" shot, the "laser" shot (very powerful but targeted) and now the "bunce" shot (the bullets burst into several pieces and bounce back on the scene). “light beam"the directional plasma ray remains its main asset by allowing to target enemies precisely. Each of these weapons has three to five levels of development. Secondary weapons include "energy lines", "mines" and "smart bomb(a super-bomb that can be used once a lifetime).

Level design

Turrican II reproduces most of the mechanics of his predecessor with some variations. The main novelties concern a greater variety of enemies or the inertia effects on the character (flowing with air or water). The interest of the game rests much on the fantasy architecture of the levels and their size, even more imposing than in the first episode. The places offer many secret, shortened passages and the great deal is to find the extra lives, bricks containing power-ups and diamonds scattered in the levels.

The first world, located in a rocky desert, recalls the introductive level of Turrican, of which he repeats the demeasure with air sequences of platforms. The second world is located in a minerai cave and has an aquatic game level. At the command of a ship, the third world includes three levels of shoot them up: one with horizontal scrolling, another with multi-directional scrolling and one last, sort of obstacle race. The fourth world is a gigantic underground labyrinth with cul-de-sac, deceit walls, secret rooms, etc. The fifth and last world is openly inspired by the aesthetics of the universe of Alien with heads of happy xenophyphs and Face Hugger (litt. "face aggregation").

Music

Like the first episode, the music of Turrican II were composed by the German Chris Hülsbeck. He digitized samples of musical instruments and the result is even more sophisticated than in the first episode. Some songs have been proposed in re-arranged versions in the album Turrican - The Original Soundtrack (1992). A pot-pourri of the music of the game was also played on the occasion of the Music Concert Video Games Symphony Leipzig Games Convention in 2004.

The soundtrack includes 26 titles:
